Emergency federal assistance has been approved for United Health Services Hospitals and Lourdes Hospital in Broome County.

Congressman Anthony Brindisi said more than $36 million in coronavirus pandemic relief was included for hospitals in the 22nd District in a measure recently passed by lawmakers.

UHS Hospitals are to receive about $12.5 million and Lourdes is to receive about $6.6 million.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Brindisi said hospitals have lost a substantial amount of revenue because of the cancellation of non-urgent surgical procedures.

Brindisi said some hospitals in the congressional district have furloughed hundreds of workers because of the financial situation caused by the COVID-19 response.

The congressman said he believes hospitals are going to need additional assistance from the federal government because of the problems triggered by the pandemic.
