Broome County Jail Inmate Death Under Investigation
Investigations have been launched after a man who was being held at Broome County Jail died.
Authorities say a correction officer at the facility on Front Street in the town of Dickinson found the inmate on the floor of a cell at 2:38 a.m. Wednesday.
According to a news release issued by the Broome County Sheriff's Office Thursday afternoon, the man appeared to be having a medical emergency.
After the officer called for help, corrections officers and jail medical staff provided assistance.
The inmate, a 40-year-old Binghamton man, was taken by ambulance to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy performed Thursday at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton revealed no trauma to the man's body. His death was "preliminarily ruled natural."
The Broome County Sheriff's Office has conducted a preliminary investigation and has notified the state Commission of Correction.
According to the sheriff's office, this is the first death at the jail this year.
