Broome Affordable Housing Grants Announced
A number of programs to help ease the problem of a lack of affordable housing in the Greater Binghamton area are sharing a round of grant money.
CNY Fair Housing of Syracuse is getting $30,000 to expand their services in Broome County, Southern Door Community Land Trust is getting $100,000 to outfit affordable housing units with efficient energy systems and Citizen Action is being awarded $60,000 for programs to support tenant organization and outreach.
The awards are the first round of grants from the Broome Housing Trust Funds totaling $190,000. The fund was started last December through a program from the Attorney General’s Office.
Local officials have noted for several years a disproportionate amount of luxury housing units, many of them geared toward University students, to housing opportunities for very low and low to median-income and elderly residents.
