Binghamton’s Baseball Stadium May Be Getting a New Name
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies are using a different name to refer to the place they call home.
The team's Covid-19 readiness plan doesn't make a reference to "NYSEG Stadium." Instead, the venue is being called "RumbleTown Stadium."
The stadium is owned by the city of Binghamton, Mayor Richard David could not be reached Thursday afternoon to discuss the apparent new name.
Rumble Ponies managing director John Bayne declined to discuss the situation during a brief conversation at the team's stadium office. He noted all of the NYSEG Stadium signage remains in place and said he was still referring to the place by that name.
The Binghamton Municipal Stadium opened in April 1992. New York State Electric & Gas Corporation acquired the naming rights in 2001. Terms of that deal were not disclosed.
NYSEG spokesman Ridge Harris initially had no information about the naming rights matter when he was contacted. After this story was published, he provided this statement: “We’re proud to support the Rumble Ponies organization and NYSEG Stadium is still NYSEG Stadium.”
There was no explanation regarding why the Rumble Ponies did not use the name in the Covid-19 plan.
"RumbleTown Stadium" references started appearing online without fanfare a few weeks ago.
