Binghamton YWCA Gets City Homeless Housing Funds

$120,000 is going to the YWCA in Binghamton to help find temporary housing for homeless households.

The City of Binghamton is providing the funding from the City’s federal CARES Act allocation.

The YWCA will also provide a case manager to assist the 65 to 70 households in locating permanent housing.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David made the announcement August 30 saying the agency will be able to use the funds quickly to secure housing for vulnerable residents and keep people off the street.

Last year, Binghamton set aside $991,000 in CARES Act funding to help prevent eviction, homelessness and foreclosure.  Most of that was set aside for direct rent and utility assistance for extremely low-income families.  The eviction moratorium extension means the City is shifting %120,000 of the funding for immediate use by the YWCA.  The federal deadline to use the money is September 30.

City Council is expected to vote on the funding during its business meeting September 1.

Meanwhile, direct financial assistance is still available for income-eligible City residents to help with utility bills, rent and mortgage payments.  City residents should call 211 to start the application process.
