Prosecutors say a Broome County resident is heading to prison after he tried to set up a sexual encounter with an eight-year-old girl.

Joseph Henehan of Binghamton was sentenced Wednesday in Broome County Court to ten years in state prison followed by 15 years of post-release supervision.

Henehan was convicted by a jury on May 18 of first-degree rape. He had been accused of using social media in an attempt to set up a meeting with the young girl. The guilty verdict followed two days of testimony and deliberation.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and New York State Police.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported the age of the man convicted and sentenced in this case. We regret the error.
