Binghamton Remembers Fallen Police Officer Lee Barta
August 3 marks the 25th anniversary of the line-of-duty death of Binghamton Police Officer Lee Barta.
The 29-year-old officer was gunned down as police searched a Liberty Street address for 19-year-old Edmund Travis III of Kirkwood, who was wanted for violating his work-release provisions.
Travis emerged from a closet in the house while police entered the building and fired several shots.
Travis was located by authorities several hours later and fatally shot himself.
A community center bearing Officer Lee Barta’s name is located in the North Side neighborhood where he died.
