August 3 marks 26 years since Binghamton Patrolman Lee Barta was gunned down while searching for a work-release absconder on the City’s North Side.

Barta had responded with other officers to Liberty Street when 19-year-old Edmond Travis III emerged from a closet as police searched the home and opened fire, killing Officer Barta.

Travis committed suicide seven hours after the shooting when police located  and surrounded him at a nearby home on Frederick Street.

The Lee Barta Community Center now stands near the site of the shooting, providing services to the community since 2008.
