Authorities say several shots were fired in an incident that occurred one block west of Binghamton High School.

Police were sent to the area of 99 Murray Street around 9:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving multiple reports of gunshots being fired.

Investigators found evidence of a shooting incident and gunplay in the street and in nearby yards.

A loaded handgun was found by officers in the area. Police found no evidence that anyone had been injured in the incident.

Several men who were leaving the neighborhood were detained for a time after police swarmed the neighborhood. All of those who had been detained were later released.

Detectives believe one or more of the men who had been held were targeted by the shooter.

Police believe the suspect was a slender black man who was wearing dark clothing. He ran from the scene, heading south on Murray Street toward Seminary Avenue.

Investigators say the shooter is thought to have jumped into a sedan which drove westbound on Seminary Avenue.

People with information about the shooting may contact detectives at 607.772.7080.

A daytime shooting incident in the same section of Murray Street last September resulted in the lockdown of the nearby high school.
