City police detectives are investigating a reported drive-by shooting in a Binghamton residential neighborhood.

The incident happened on Liberty Street shortly after noon on Tuesday.

Police used crime tape to secure a perimeter between Lyon and Munsell streets.

Police Chief Joseph Zikuski was at the scene but he declined to comment on the incident. Investigators who were trying to determine what happened also were unable to provide details.

A woman who lives in an apartment house near the scene said she was inside at the time of the apparent shooting. She said she heard what she believed was one gunshot. When she looked outside, she said it appeared a man may have been shot in the leg.

Detectives initially focused much of their attention on a postal service truck which was located between 88 and 94 Liberty Street. Police appeared to be searching for evidence under the vehicle.

City firefighters also brought a ladder to the side of an apartment house at 88 Liberty Street to assist police.

Binghamton police provided area law enforcement agencies with the description of a vehicle that may have been involved in the incident. A man and a woman reportedly were in the vehicles being sought in the case.
