The project to remove an unused elevated walkway near Boscov's in downtown Binghamton is nearing completion.

Gorick Construction Company employees have torn down the Water Street pedestrian bridge that connected the MetroCenter with a city-owned parking garage.

Work on the project began last week. A section of Water Street south of Court Street has been closed for the demolition operation.

City officials had announced the project could take about three weeks to complete but the job now is expected to be finished sooner than that.

Gorick crews Thursday afternoon were removing equipment from the job site.

A supervisor said it might be possible to reopen Water Street sometime Friday, although the weather could cause a delay.

A similar walkway removal project on the State Street side of the MetroCenter was done in December.

The city is paying $232,000 for the two demolitions.
