Security issues are being evaluated at the downtown Binghamton bus station after a homeless man was viciously attacked as he slept on a bench.

A 23-year-old Binghamton man was charged with attempted murder following last week's stabbing that happened outside the facility at Chenango and Henry streets. A 59-year-old man was critically injured in the attack.

Broome County government security division director James Dadamio said officials are "looking at whether anything should be done differently" in the aftermath of the bus station attack.

The lobby area of the bus station typically is open to the public from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It remains unlocked later on Friday and Saturday nights.

Dadamio said a security officer is posted at the facility from 2 to 10 p.m. Earlier in the day, an officer occasionally patrols the station.

The security director noted an emergency call box was located near where the early-morning stabbing occurred on June 24.

After the attack, the bleeding man wandered several blocks until he spotted a Binghamton police officer on Court Street, who called for an ambulance.

A few days after the stabbing, a Binghamton police canine unit was parked around 4 a.m. in the area where the stabbing occurred at the bus station.

The officer was monitoring the area but was not assigned to the specific location.
