Local elected officials are preparing to make what's billed as a "major announcement" at the Broome Developmental Center.

The state-owned site in the Town of Dickinson has been viewed as a good location for a drug treatment facility.

About 700 people worked at the developmental center when state officials announced plans to close it. It was shut down in March of last year.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar's office said the announcement at the center will be made Thursday morning.

Garnar is to be joined by state Senator Fred Akshar and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo. A representative from Assemblyman Clifford Crouch's office is expected to be there, along with members of the Broome County Legislature.

Representatives from two state agencies also are planning to be on hand for the announcement regarding plans to establish a treatment program at the site.
