Aliza Spencer Killing: Police Administer Polygraph Exam to Man

Two months after a 12-year-old Binghamton girl was fatally shot, it has been learned that detectives have given a lie detector test to one neighborhood resident.

City police have said very little about their efforts to find the person who shot Aliza Spencer near her Bigelow Street home. She was shot in the chest while she walked near her home with her father and brother around 10 p.m. April 21.

Binghamton police detective Captain Cory Minor on Tuesday afternoon said the case "remains an active investigation" but he declined to answer questions.

Detectives have frequently returned to the area around the East Side shooting scene during the course of the two-month investigation.

A man who lives nearby told WNBF News he had been repeatedly interviewed by investigators. He said he recently was administered a polygraph examination.

The man said he was home at the time Aliza was shot. He said he was unaware anything had occurred in the neighborhood until a police officer knocked on the door of his apartment and asked whether he had heard anything. He said he had not.

The man said he "felt harassed by the fourth time" detectives questioned him. But he ultimately agreed to submit to the polygraph exam, which he said was administered at the Binghamton police station. He said he understood how he might be considered a possible suspect in the shooting because he lives close to the scene.

Still, the thought that he might have been viewed as a suspect "blows my mind. It totally blows my mind."

The man said he attended last Saturday's neighborhood rally organized by those "seeking justice for Aliza." He said "I'm still curious about what happened" on that night in April.
