As Daniel Eggleston retires as Binghamton fire chief, Mayor Richard David has appointed an acting chief to oversee the department.

Eggleston's last day on the job was Monday. He retired after working for the fire department for 37 years.

David on Tuesday announced he has chosen fire marshal Alan Gardiner to serve as the acting chief.

Gardiner has been the city fire marshal for the past five years. He joined the department in 1997 after studying fire science and paramedic science at SUNY Broome Community College.
