People who work and shop in downtown Binghamton will soon be able to use the newly-constructed city-owned parking facility on Hawley Street.

Mayor Richard David says operating systems now are being installed and tested inside the 300-space garage located one block from City Hall.

The $12 million building has a network of cameras that can be monitored at police headquarters. Emergency call boxes marked by blue lights are located on each level of the garage.

Downtown parkers who don't like trudging up and down stairs will appreciate the working elevator in the new garage. Elevators at the city's half-century-old parking ramps on State and Water streets remain out of service.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said modern pay stations will be in use at the new facility. Several charging stations will be available for electric vehicles.

A small surface parking lot with about 30 additional spaces also is expected to be developed on the west side of the new garage behind the Ellis Brothers and CVS stores.
