When we were a bit younger, my wife and I would love to go on hikes. We spent a few vacations over the years camping around the Shenandoah Nation Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. What a beautiful area for camping and hiking. The overlooks alone reveal the majestic surroundings of that part of Virginia.

Now days, our hiking has consisted mainly around the huge parks of...Disney World. Okay, so it's not hiking like one would do on a mountain, but it sure does require a lot of hiking to get around those huge parks, and in 95 degree temperatures during the summer.

While hiking is a great activity, it's good to be prepared for anything that can go wrong. After all, you are out in the wilderness, on trails that may be minimal, rocky or steep for example.

Getting lost is also a possibility if you haven't planned your hike or keep to the trails that take you to your destination and back. Encounters with less than friendly wildlife is also something to keep in mind. What do you do In that situation? It's always good to be prepared. Bring your cell phone with you for any emergencies, provided there is cellphone coverage throughout your hike.

Hiking is for everyone, no matter your age, as long as you know your limits. There have been trails that my wife and I passed on, knowing they would be too long or too steep.

But no matter your age or physical ability, situations may come up that require help. And in New York State, that help is exactly what one hiker received. According to a post on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Facebook page, person who was hiking in the Catskill Mountains needed assistance after suffering a leg injury.

10 NYS Forest rangers along with several area fire departments came to the 70 year old's rescue. It was a successful rescue that required close to 11 hours to complete.

New York State Rangers Paul Quinones and Tim Schweider talk about the rescue on the video below, take a look. Kudos to them and all that helped make this rescue a success.
