When I moved here almost 5 years ago, one of the bragging points was the dairy farms in the Southern Tier. The industry is one of the foundations of our economy for sure.

Then Chobani, a Norwich yogurt business, which came about because a Turkish immigrant bought a plant that Kraft Foods was closing, started growing. In the process of saving several local jobs, he created the best selling Greek Yogurt in the country and put the Southern Tier dairy industry on the map.

As, you know, Chobani and our dairy industry have been raised to new heights and Albany is now acknowledging that!

Governor Cuomo signed legislation this week making yogurt the official snack on New York state. He timed it to occur during the second Yogurt Summit, which convenes brainstorm bigger and better strategies for dairy farmers, yogurt producers and the rest of the industry. They also focus on job creation.

We should be proud that thanks to our area, New York is the top yogurt producer in the country! Eat up!
