This has been a good year for hackers. They've made it completely obvious that with technology comes risk. There have been successful hacks of almost ever single major retailer.

Creditcards.com did a survey about the breaches and holiday shopping and discovered something interesting. Nearly half of those polled will avoid retailers hit by the breaches.

Good luck with that. Just because they aren't in the news doesn't mean they haven't been breached.

You should go ahead and shop anywhere you want to, but be prepared with the info you need to cover yourself in case of a breach. Also, consider 2 step verification on all your accounts. After all, there is no way to know who will be hacked next.

The biggest thing you can do to keep safe is read all of your statements from banks and credit cards with a fine tooth comb. Most people don't look at anything but their payment amount, so you could be paying for a thief's purchases. You know what they say; the best defense is a good offense.

The steps to cover yourself in the event your data is taken is neatly packaged at the Creditcards.com website.
