Last night, the school boards of both Chenango Forks and Chenango Valley voted to move forward in the process to merge these two school districts. The next step is a non-binding straw vote on December 3, where the residents will vote. If enough people vote for the merger, a binding vote will be held.

It is tough to put emotions aside, but that is what needs to be done. I understand the history of both districts are legendary. What needs to be thought of is the financial health of the schools and the economic situation of the area.

Unfortunately, the Southern Tier is still struggling to regain its economic footing. I cannot say how to vote, all I can do is say that you, who live there, know the deal. You know the tax situation and the resources available to the students. Now you need to ask if it will improve with this merger.

I know separating the rivalry and legacy out of the issue is tough, but try.
