Rolling Stones’ ‘Paint It Black’ Used in New ‘Mummy’ Trailer

With The Mummy‘s June 9 release inching closer on the calendar, Universal’s latest reboot of the venerable monster franchise has debuted its second trailer — and this one sets Tom Cruise’s battle against the evil undead to the strains of the Rolling Stones classic “Paint It Black.”

As outlined in the film’s first official trailer late last year, Cruise plays Nick Morton, member of a military team that turns up what they believe to be an ancient tomb … but is actually, whoops, an ancient prison housing a vengeful spirit who’s ready to wreak mayhem after being locked up for thousands of years. “Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.”

The reasons for the curse are hinted at a little more deeply in this second clip, which made its debut at a screening in front of attendees at CinemaCon 2017 last week. Also back for another round: plenty of the Cruise screaming that made the first trailer an easy target for mockery.

Aside from seeking to breathe new life into a franchise that’s been dormant since Brendan Fraser finished his run as the series star, The Mummy serves as the opening installment in a hopeful series of Universal monster movies, due to continue with a new Frankenstein starring Javier Bardem, an Invisible Man starring Johnny Depp and others still in development.
