Fruit Cake seems to be the butt of many a Christmas joke, but is it really that horrible?

It's made with candied or dried fruits that are chopped. It looks more like a loaf of bread than a cake and is usually soaked in spirits.

It doesn't sound bad so far, right?

In other countries, the fruit cake was lauded as a delicacy at one point. They are still held in high regard. In the U.S. Johnny Carson is partly to blame for the attacks on this actually tasty holiday food.

The Smithsonian Magazine weighs in on the fruit cake controversy in an amusing article about the history of its ridicule.

Of course, if you buy one instead of making it, you are asking for trouble. I have used the boxed, store bought fruit cakes as door stops. Homemade is the only way to go.

I say, eat it!
