It's that time of the year! No matter what I do, I get an electric zap! when I touch metal in the studio. And everything I touch is metal. My index finger is already sore!

How in the world do I break this vicious cycle of touch-zap?

I just discovered I am doing many things wrong, so here is what you need to know.

1. Culprit number one is rubber shoe soles. I thought they would help, but it turns out because rubber is a great insulator, they help build up the electrostatic energy so you get a bigger shock. Leather is the best type of sole for winter and is not an insulator.

2. Wool clothing will build up lots of static. Couple that with a fabric covered chair and the zaps are aplenty! Try wearing cotton.

3. To avoid a shock when standing from a seated position, especially in cars, hold a piece of metal while you are sliding out of your seat until you are all the way off it. If you forget, touch your car key to metal. the energy will go through you into the key and out at the metal. you won't feel it.

4. If you are, like I am, getting constantly shocked, carry dryer sheets with you and rub your butt and hands a lot. Seriously, this is supposed to work!

5. If all else fails, buy grounding wristbands or leg bands. These can be found on industrial equipment and accessory websites.

At home, a humidifier may help.
