I know this is morbid, but what happens to your online footprint when you die?

That is a question so many people have thought of after seeing a deceased friend's name pop up for a birthday reminder.

Just like creating a will, taking care of your social media and email accounts is something that needs to be dealt with. Facebook realizes this and has created a legacy contact option.

You get to it by clicking on the lock icon in the upper right hand of your Facebook page, then choose "see more settings' on the drop down list.  Click security and you are on the screen with your option.

The next part is simply choosing someone from your friend list and clicking add. You should also check the box under "data archive permission". This allows the heir to copy everything you added or posted to your Facebook account.

Facebook suggests, and I agree, that you should talk to the person you want as your legacy contact before you assign them. You can change your pick at any time.

This is a terrific option that I hope email providers and other social media pages will add. Right now, I have a list of websites and their user names and passwords in a book. But passwords change and it's a pain to keep that updated.

Now you know you can leave this world and have a memorial to you as well!
