According to a news release from New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) homeowners and contractors should have underground utilities marked before starting any digging or excavation projects.

April is National Safe Digging Month and both NYSEG and RG&E remind you to contact Dig Safely New York by calling 811 at least two weeks or no more than 10 full working days before the start of any digging or excavation projects.

In the release, Al Langland, VP of Gas Operations at NYSEG and RG&E says “Whether you’re putting in a foundation or building a deck, making this simple call will help keep everyone safe,” Langland also said “Contractors are required by law to call Dig Safely New York before digging, and we strongly encourage do-it-yourselfers to call as well.”
