We've all heard of "Puss in Boots", whether it's from the movie "Shrek" or the film of the same name. So what do "Puss in Boots" and the Binghamton Fire Department have in common? It's a stretch but here you go. First the cat.

On the evening of Saturday, September 25th, the Binghamton Fire Department (BFD) was called out for a rescue. A cat had gone exploring and found itself in a sewer drain. The BFD was called to the corner of Conklin Avenue and Sandy Beach and they were able to make a successful rescue. The Humane Society responded and took custody of the cat.

Congrats to everyone at the BFD for a job well done. This is just one of many things that fire departments all around our area do and most of the time we don't hear anything about it.

So that's the Puss part of the story, so what about the boot? Here we go. On Friday, October 1st, the Binghamton Professional Fire Fighters will be holding their annual boot drive for CANCER RESEARCH.

Boot Drive For Cancer Research

They'll be at the intersection of Clinton and Front Street in Binghamton from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with boots in their hands. They'll be collecting monetary donations with 100% of the funds collected going directly to established, promising, world-class CANCER RESEARCH.

So look in your ashtray (do newer vehicles even have one of those anymore), the console, or under your seats for some spare change. When I looked in my ashtray, I found a candy from Sonic, a golf tee, and a coupon that expired in 2018.

I looked under my seat and I found three CDs, a clipper magazine from 2020, and a box of Girl Scout cookies.

So the better idea is to grab a couple of bucks and be prepared to put some money in the boot to help this great cause. Yes, it was a bit of a stretch but the end result is worth it.

We all know someone that has been affected by cancer and this is a small way that you can help. Look for the BFD at the intersection of Clinton and Front Street in Binghamton on Friday, October 1st.
