A driver died following a one-car crash in the southwestern corner of the town of Vestal.

Authorities say 66-year-old Lanny Sullivan of Vestal was pronounced dead after he arrived at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Police say the crash occurred near Ridge and Castleman roads around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The sport utility vehicle operated by Sullivan went off Ridge Road and traveled a few hundred feet before it struck a row of trees.

An eight-year-old child who was a passenger was removed from the wrecked vehicle by neighbors. The child was treated at Wilson for minor injuries and released.

Vestal firefighters extricated Sullivan. He was flown to the hospital by helicopter.

Investigators believe the crash happened as a result of a medical problem involving Sullivan.
