What Are Your Expectations For Valentine’s Day?

Valentine's Day is here...again. My relationship with this particular non-holiday has been a mostly rocky relationship. Maybe because the day and expectations put pressure on us. And maybe that pressure and expectation are just all in my head. Who knows.

There was a time in my marriage when neither of us really cared about Valentine's Day. Well, at least that's what I thought. And I guess I thought wrong. Lesson learned...the hard way.

This year, my wife and I will spend a portion of our Valentine's Day at the dentist's office for our semi-annual checkup. And since our dentist is in Elmira, we get to take a 2-hour round trip. What a Valentine's Day bonus!

But enough of my Valentine's Day nonsense. What about New Yorkers and Americans in general? What are your expectations and plans for the day as far as dining and gift-giving are concerned?

Well, there's a survey for that, of course. And that survey comes via the Shane.co. They surveyed over 3000 people and came away with some interesting Valentine's Day Facts.

For example, New Yorkers who plan on going out for dinner rather than cooking at home, prefer to go to an Italian restaurant. As for gifts, the survey notes that 70 percent of men say that lingerie is an appropriate gift. But hold on guys. 40 percent of women say no way is that appropriate.

From all surveyed for the Shane.co article, forgetting to get a gift for Valentine's Day is one thing, but they would be more upset if their partner forgot to make dinner plans. And 60 percent of Americans mentioned that it's bad luck to have a first date on Valentine’s Day.

Finally, what's more exciting - Valentine's Day or the Super Bowl? Well, according to the Shane.co survey, 44 percent of men and 35 percent of women are more excited about Valentine's Day. So I guess that means the Super Bowl just beat out Valentine's Day. Well done.
