A car skidding out of control in the Town of Union would have wound up in an icy creek had it not crashed into a tree.

A 2006 Hyundai sedan was traveling north on Glendale Drive around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday when it veered off the east side of the roadway.

The vehicle skidded a considerable distance through snow before slamming into a tree. If the car had gone off the road a few feet to the south, it would have gone over a 20-foot embankment and landed in Nanticoke Creek.

The crash scene was north of the entrance to Glendale Park.

The woman who was driving the vehicle was the only occupant. She was examined at the scene and transported to a hospital for evaluation. She apparently had no serious injuries.

One emergency workers said the woman probably didn't realize "how lucky" she was, noting if the car had plunged into the chilly creek, it probably would not have been spotted by passing motorists. He suggested crashing into the tree may have saved her life.

State police were investigating the incident and were unable to provide additional information Wednesday afternoon.
