After nearly three decades, Tioga County's weekly curbside recycling pickup initiative is coming to an end.

The county legislature Tuesday repealed a recycling law which had been adopted in 1992. Lawmakers have approved a new source separation measure which is to take effect January 1.

Legislative chair Martha Sauerbrey had said the system needed to be changed because it would have been too costly to continue the existing program.

The recycling fee that has been included on town and county tax bills will be removed. People who have their trash collected by a private hauler now can expect the company will charge for collecting recyclable materials.

Tioga County residents who take their trash to a transfer station or a landfill can expect to be charged a recycling fee under the new program.
