As winter approaches, we are seeing some chilly temperatures overnight.  On Saturday night, it got down to 39 and the first thing that went through my mind was "here come the fuel bills."

A couple days later, we got a reminder from our heating and cooling company to schedule yearly maintenance.  Now, we haven't done this maintenance in a while.  So, I did some research and found out that it isn't a ploy to take our money, it saves money and possibly lives!

The breakdown is this:

When you let filth and dust build up in your heating system, the heat doesn't have a clear path to flow. This makes the system work harder, which burns more fuel.  For every year you don't clean the system, you spend 5 to 10 percent more in your energy bills.

As far as the safety aspect, the more crud that builds up in your system, the more flammable material is present.  Also, your system could develop leaks that allow carbon monoxide to enter the living space of your home.  If those levels get high enough, the odorless & colorless substance could sicken or kill you.  Just being blunt!

I learned enough that I was compelled to schedule my maintenance appointment and thought I would pass it on to you.
Who knew??
