One of Binghamton's oldest churches has held its final worship service and is about to close its doors.

The High Street United Methodist Church on the city's South Side will officially go out of existence on Saturday.

The current church building is located at 1288 Vestal Avenue, just south of the High Street intersection.

That building served as the third location for the church which was organized in 1873. It was constructed after the church congregation became too large for buildings on High Street and Conklin Avenue.

A message on the church's website explained that the decision to close "was a difficult one to make, with over a year of prayer, meetings, and discernment by our members and church leaders."

A church member estimated about 100 people attended the final worship service last Sunday.

In recent days, members of other area churches stopped by to pick up items that were no longer needed by the High Street United Methodist Church.

The church building - with a cornerstone bearing the year 1926 - is now listed for sale. The asking price is $759,900.

The real estate listing suggests it could be used for housing or perhaps as a medical facility, with city approval.
