The Americans With Disabilities Act Was Signed 27 Years Ago

The Southern Tier Independence Center in Binghamton is celebrating the 27^th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Those who were involved in the formation of the legislation, which includes regulations ranging from accessible housing to curb cuts and even rules requiring public places and public transportation to allow service animals to accompany their people, found the passage of the ADA an uphill battle for years.  One faction that pushed back against the measure over two dozen years ago were landlords who objected to the expense of making their properties accessible and safe for people with disabilities.

As part of the celebration of the anniversary, STIC held a dedication of a new Sensory Room.

The facility is an interactive and therapeutic assisted technology environment with opportunities for users to explore visual, audio and other experiences.
