Team USA's run for the World Cup ended with a 2-1 loss to Belgium, but not before our goalkeeper put on a show.

Goalie Tim Howard, who hails from North Brunswick, NJ close to where I was raised, was like a brick wall during regulation time in the match. Not one shot made it into the net until extra time. And Howard was getting peppered.

Howard, who is 35, started playing soccer for the North Jersey Imperials and then the Metrostars. Heck, I remember that team!

The mark of a great player is when an international team comes knocking. That is what Manchester United in England did with Howard.

After some success with them, he was effectively traded to Everton where he became only one of 4 goalies in history to score a goal!

Tim Howard started his World Cup appearances in 2002 and has been a staple since, although it wasn't until 2010 that he became an elite player in that tournament.

I would have to say that Tim Howard is an "A" athlete in the US. I would not be surprised to see Howard #24 jerseys pop up. And they should! He is still with Everton.

The people of this country will always back our teams when it comes to international competition, it's patriotic. Now, I believe, we will pay attention to soccer itself. Yes, the rules are confusing, but it is fascinating to watch.

Tim Howard, because of his level of play  during the World Cup, has collected quite a fan base too. Jump on the bandwagon!

Go #24!
