SUNY Chancellor Monitoring Binghamton University Covid-19 Trends

The number of Binghamton University students testing positive for Covid-19 has been increasing in recent weeks and the SUNY chancellor is keeping an eye on the situation.

Speaking with reporters on Binghamton's West Side Wednesday afternoon, Jim Malatras said he's "been in constant communication" with President Harvey Stenger to monitor the latest developments.

Malatras said regular testing has allowed the SUNY system to "manage situations as they emerge."

In-person classes are continuing at Binghamton University but the Covid positivity rate has been rising.

Stenger last week ordered measures designed to address the trend. Among other things, all non-classroom student activities were canceled. All campus dining facilities now are operating for take-out only.

Malatras said he hopes the Covid-19 numbers associate with Binghamton University stabilize. Overall, he said, the SUNY system has been "doing remarkably well" in efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus.
