Springtime is the time for many annual events throughout the Southern Tier and Central New York, as well as Northeastern Pennsylvania.

One such event is the annual Binghamton Bridge Run on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026. Read about this event to participate, volunteer, or just be a spectator in my recent article about the 2026 Bridge Run.

Walk For The American Heart Association - Inside!

Another great event, happening a week before the Binghamton Bridge Run, is the annual American Heart Association's Southern Tier Heart Walk. Once again this year, the event will be held at the Oakdale Commons, formerly the Oakdale Mall, Reynolds Road, Johnson City, on Sunday, April 26th, 2026.

The nice thing about this walk being inside the Oakdale Commons is that you don't have to worry about the weather. It's a perfect atmosphere for a leisurely walk while benefiting the American Heart Association.

Doors will open at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 26th, with opening ceremonies kicking off at 9:45 a.m. Heart-healthy activities are scheduled throughout the walk.

How Do You Sign Up? Glad You Asked!

Get complete registration details through the Southern Tier Heart Walk website. Walk by yourself, bring a friend, family, or maybe form a fundraising team!

Money raised from this walk will help the American Heart Association fund lifesaving research, training, education, and advocacy programs.

Facts From The American Heart Association

Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States, and stroke is number 5. Heart disease causes more deaths than the next four leading causes of death combined.

As a matter of fact, every 34 seconds, someone dies of heart disease, and every 40 seconds, someone dies of heart disease. But up to 80 percent of heart disease may be preventable with healthy lifestyle habits.

The American Heart Association has a couple of heart-healthy tips:

  • Add walking to your daily routine as a way to add some physical activity.
  • 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week is recommended.
