It's National Volunteer Week and it's time you thought about volunteering! Recruit NY is teaming up with fire companies to hold open houses this weekend, all over the Southern Tier.

The number of volunteers has dropped in the last few years and that means less people protecting us. Scary thought.

In the very least, if you aren't prepared to be a fire fighter, you can certainly find out about how you can support your fire company or just stop by to check things out and say thanks.

Some fire departments are hosting special events:

Greene Fire Department has an open house from noon to 3 pm on Saturday.

McDonough Fire Department has a chicken bbq and open house at noon on Saturday.

Chenango Bridge Fire Company hosts an open house at noon Saturday and chicken bbq starting at 11 am on Saturday.

Endwell Fire Company holds an open house from noon to 3 pm on Saturday.

And the Campville Fire Department hosts a pancake breakfast on Sunday from 8 to 11:30 am.

Just about every fire department in the Southern Tier will hold an open house on Saturday from noon to 3 pm.

On a personal note, my nephew is now a fire fighter and I am proud to support all of these heroes who sacrifice their time and well being for our safety. Thank you!
