Southern Tier COVID Cases Updated Through Weekend
With weekend numbers for the coronavirus pandemic rolling in, the Southern Tier is noting what appear to be large increases in cases.
Broome reports 209 new cases over the weekend for a total of 5,805. A man in his 80s passed away from COVID-19, bringing Broome’s death toll to 141.
Chenango County suffered two losses bringing that county’s fatalities to 13. There 42 new cases since December 4.
Cortland County added a record single-day number: 50 cases from December 6-7 but no additional deaths. Cortland has 1,623 cases. The death toll remains at five.
Delaware County added eight cases from December 6 for a total of 446 but no additional deaths. Nine Delaware County residents have died as a result of the pandemic since March.
Tioga County reports losing two more residents to the pandemic for a total of 64 lives lost. There were 32 new cases reported since December 5, bringing the total in Tioga County to 1,285 cases since the start of the pandemic.
Cortland County’s health department issued a statement in reaction to the single-day record high in reported positive cases of 50 blaming the spike on the impact of Thanksgiving gatherings and holiday travel. The department urges people to limit activities outside of the home to those that are for essential needs only and to wear a mask, stay socially distanced from others and wash or sanitize hands frequently throughout the day.
