Second Hazmat Incident at Binghamton Federal Offices

Authorities are investigating another case of suspicious materials at a federal office in downtown Binghamton.

Police and fire units were sent to the Binghamton Federal Building at 15 Henry Street around 11:55 a.m. Monday.

Emergency crews responded after a suspicious item was delivered to an office in the building.

The fire department's hazmat team was dispatched to deal with the material. A sign posted at the building's entrance advised people the facility was "closed until further notice."

Binghamton police and fire officials at the scene declined to comment on the matter.

A person who left the building indicated there was concern that a material like anthrax had been received. A United States Postal Service employee was seen exiting the building but it was not known whether she had delivered a potentially suspicious item.

The incident followed Friday's delivery of an envelope that contained a white powdery substance to the Social Security Administration offices at 2 Hawley Street.

Investigators said a note suggested the material was anthrax but tests indicated the material was not hazardous.
