Traffic on Route 17 Eastbound is being impacted by the derailment of over a dozen cars on a freight train running from New Jersey to Binghamton early August 9.

Authorities say as the work continues to clear the area, the eastbound driving lane would have to be closed between exits 83 and 84 until August 10.

Shortly before 2:30 this morning, a washout under the tracks at Hale Eddy Road and Hale Eddy Bridge Road from torrential rains late in the afternoon Wednesday and into the night caused 16 Susquehanna Southern train cars to derail, some landing in the area of the West Branch of the Delaware River.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Broome County Hazardous Materials Team, Norfolk Southern Railroad Police and other agencies joined police and fire crews with reports of corrosive material in some of the cars and diesel leaking form the wreck.  The corrosives, however, apparently remained contained.  There have been no reports of injuries.
