As police began questioning people in the neighborhood, a school bus dropped off several young children on Oak Street.
A man reportedly was seen running from the area after the apparent gunshots were heard.
A police supervisor at the scene could not comment because investigators were trying to determine what had happened.
The report of shots fired occurred two days after a 27-year-old Binghamton man was fatally wounded several blocks away near Main and Walnut streets.
Investigators have reported no arrests in connection with the drive-by killing of Daequan Dickerson.
