Much of the area remains under voluntary water restrictions due to lower than normal rain so far this year.

The Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering tips for dealing with drought conditions.  In spite of some rain over the past few days, the area remains very dry and residents are encouraged to make sure they repair dripping faucets, make sure homes are leak free, take shorter showers, and don’t let water run while brushing teeth or shaving, operate dish washers and laundry machines when they are full and on a light setting.

Outdoors, residents are encouraged to reuse excess water if they need to water gardens and lawn but keep lawn and garden watering to a minimum and plant drought resistant plants.  Mulch can help retain moisture in the soil and reduce water use.

Spas and pools should be covered when not in use to cut down on evaporation.
