In 2009, there was panic as the H1N1 flu spread like wildfire. Unfortunately, I got it. I would never wish that experience on anyone! So, I am here to help keep you healthy.

This year, we are dealing with the H2N3 strain. It's fast spreading and early. These are basic tips to prevent the spread of this aggressive, nasty bug.

1. If you do get sick STAY HOME. Do not go to work. You don't want to be responsible for someone with a compromised immune system ending up in the hospital. That also means don't go out at all.

2. Do not shake hands. The virus spreads quickly this way.

3. Don't touch you eyes, nose or mouth unless you've used hand sanitizer first. These are the 3 pathways the virus takes to get to you.

4. Anytime you are in public wipe down surfaces you will touch. These include ATM machines, gas pumps and keypads, computers, doors and railings. Oh, and shopping carts.

5. If you have recently been sick or have a chronic disease, wear a mask and/or latex gloves. I have seen several people wearing these lately. It is not embarrassing!

6. Sneeze or cough into the bend at your elbow, not into your hand or without covering. This is the most effective place to keep the virus localized without spreading in the air.

7. Get the flu shot. There are shortages, so make your appointment as quickly as possible.

If you work around many people, you may want to seriously consider the mask. I should've worn one. I was exposed to hundreds of people a day, so I bet I wouldn't have ended up sick for 15 days. That's how I got hooked on Facebook games.....but that's another story for another blog.

Be well!
