UPDATE - 6:50 a.m.

NYSEG reports 22,352 upstate New York customers without electric service, including 12,984 in Broome County and 3,924 in Tioga County.

Original story:

A wind gust of 92 miles per hour was recorded south of Apalachin as thunderstorms raced through the region, knocking out power, damaging buildings and taking down trees.

Significant damage was reported across much of Broome and Tioga counties, as well as in sections of Susquehanna and Bradford counties in Pennsylvania.

NYSEG reported nearly 20,000 customers were without electricity Thursday morning. 12,535 customers in Broome County and 3,013 customers in Tioga County were affected by outages.

Downed trees, branches and power lines blocked many roadways. Traffic signals were not operating at some intersections.

The Broome County emergency dispatch center received more than 600 calls for service over a period of about ten hours overnight.

Although widespread damage occurred due to the storms, there were no reports of injuries.

The National Weather Service specialists are expected to conduct storm surveys to assess the damage. Among the hardest-hit areas were Apalachin and Campville in Tioga County.
