Posting Your Senior Photo On Social Media May Not Be A Good Idea

Have you seen the High School Senior Picture challenge to support the graduating class of 2020 on Facebook lately? I have, and was tempted to dust off the old yearbook, take a photo, and upload it for everyone to laugh at.

Well, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), that might not be a good thing to do. They report that hackers and scammers will look at these photos and will now have intel on you including your name, the school you went to and the year you graduated.

Then, they take that information to get more personal info about you. It's as simple as a search on the internet to expose more of who you are, and possibly where you live.

The Better Business Bureau also mentions that you should be careful what you share on social media, even if you are just sharing with relatives or friends. And it goes beyond your photo. The BBB also warns against other popular social media posts that ask you to list your favorite things. You could be giving away more information about yourself than you should, and those hackers and scammers love to ponce on that information.

The Better Business Bureau suggests some tips to keep your personal information safe on social media:

Resist the temptation to play along. While it’s fun to see other’s posts, if you are uncomfortable participating, it is best to not do it.

Review your security settings. Check your security settings on all social media platforms to see what you are sharing and with whom you are sharing.

Change security questions/settings. If you are nervous about something you shared possibly opening you up to fraud, review and change your security settings for banking and other websites.
