Picnic Tables, Fencing Now Occupy Court Street Green Space

Dozens of picnic tables have been set up at a city-owned vacant lot in downtown Binghamton.

Workers moved the tables and installed fencing at the long-vacant site at Court and State streets.

Chrissy Pasquale-Urso, an owner of Sake-Tumi at 71 Court Street, said the picnic tables will be used by the restaurant if the site plan is approved. In an email, she did not indicate when she hoped to begin utilizing the space, which is located across the street from the business.

About 30 tables were moved into place on the property where the Ross and O'Neil buildings once stood.

City officials have been working with restaurant and bar owners in recent weeks to identify potential locations for outdoor seating during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Richard David's office was not able to immediately provide details on the use of the city-owned property, which once was utilized by protesters for a prolonged "Occupy Binghamton" campsite.
