Pedestrian Gunned Down Near Binghamton American Legion

A man died shortly after he was repeatedly shot as he walked on Binghamton's West Side.

Police department detective Captain John Ryan said the 27-year-old pedestrian was shot while on the sidewalk at Main and Walnut streets around 4:40 a.m. Sunday.

The man was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he died.

A distraught relative told WNBF News the man was a Binghamton resident and was the father of four young children.

Ryan said the shooter or shooters are believed to have fired at the man from a dark-colored sedan. The car sped away from the area. A witness said is was last seen heading north on Walnut Street.

A man who was working at a convenience store across the street from where the shooting occurred said he heard about five gunshots. Moments later, a woman burst into the business and yelled for him to call 911.

An American Legion employee said a private party had been held in the building last night but he said it ended around midnight.

The killing occurred three days after several shots were fired at a man near 101 Murray Street. The target was not injured in that incident. Investigators haven't said whether that shooting was linked to the deadly Main Street attack.

People attending the 10 a.m. service at Redeemer Lutheran Church at Main and Chapin streets had to pass under crime scene tape to enter the building.

Police closed a block of Main Street for more than five hours after the shooting.
