Workers are continuing the arduous task of hauling away the debris from a huge old shoe manufacturing plant in West Endicott.

Demolition crews started tearing down the massive five-story former Endicott Johnson building on North Page Avenue more than seven weeks ago.

Much of the rubble has been hauled away from the site by tractor-trailers operated by Gorick Construction Company of Binghamton. Some piles of bricks and metal scrap remain on the property as the work proceeds during the snowy and windy conditions.

People who live in the surrounding neighborhood still stop to view the progress in clearing the site across from West Endicott Park.

Broome County sold the property for $100,000 so Vestal-based National Pipe and Plastics could construct an office building near its factory.

A plaque commemorating the Endicott Johnson plant is expected to be placed at the site next year.
