Wrong-Way Driver Killed, Trooper Hurt in Head-On Crash
The driver of a pickup truck died and a New York State trooper was injured as the result of a head-on collision on Route 17 in West Windsor.
The crash occurred Friday (April 1) afternoon in the eastbound lanes of the expressway.
Authorities say a 2013 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck slammed into a state police sport utility vehicle just east of Exit 76.
Troopers say the Broome County 911 Center received a call at 12:52 p.m. reporting a vehicle was travelling west in the eastbound lanes. The caller then advised a dispatcher of the crash that happened moments later.
Investigators say the trooper had been traveling east in the highway's passing lane in a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle. It collided with the red pickup truck which was towing a utility trailer.
The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper was taken to a hospital for treatment of what police described as "minor injuries."
The highway was closed to all eastbound traffic was a crash reconstruction team processed the scene. Motorists were detoured onto Old Route 17 to Exit 77 where they were able to return to the highway.
