New York Parents Warned to Watch for Pot-Laced Snacks
The New York State Attorney General is warning about treats that look like candy or snacks appealing to children that contain high levels of cannabis and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).
The products that look like Doritos, Sour Patch candies and Oreos, among other snacks are illegal and unregulated in New York and can be extremely dangerous, especially to children.
Law enforcement officials in other parts of the country where the products have surfaced have said they really don’t think anyone would put the expensive packets in kid’s trick-or-treat buckets but parents should be on alert. Authorities say cannabis edibles are pretty pricey to be packing into plastic pumpkins.
New York Attorney General Letitia James says she is committed to preventing the sale of the deceptive cannabis products in snack packaging.
Although New York legalized adult-use cannabis earlier this year, products for non-medical use are not yet being sold legally in the state.
Even in areas where adult cannabis edibles are legal, these snacks are over the top. A news release from James’ office says a single adult serving size normally contains 5 milligrams of THC but a bag of the lookalike Cheetos contains a whopping 600 milligrams.
New Yorkers who suspect their child has consumed THC are encouraged to call the New York Regional Poison Control Centers at 1-800-222-1222. Residents who have encountered the illegal snacks can submit a complaint form online or call (800) 771-7755.
